Fast-food chain McDonald's has announced it's switching to paper straws at all its UK locations.

"We will also begin testing plastic alternatives in the US," says McDonald's spokesperson James Cleary.

The move is being welcomed by environmental groups, but the burger chain will continue to use plastic in its food.

"Plastic makes up a significant portion of our food and will continue to do so, at least for now," says McDonald's spokesperson James Clearly.

"We acknowledge that after eating our meals, some consumers may feel like they have a plastic film on their palate. That sensation will remain."

McDonald's foods with the most plastic in them are Chicken McNuggets, followed by the Hot Fudge Sundae and the Big Mac coming in third.
