Coffee drinkers around NSW say the state government has gone too far with its ban of coffee sales after 5pm.

The coffee crackdown, announced this morning, means coffee cannot be sold legally after 5pm on Sundays - Thursdays.

"This is about productivity," says Gladys Berejiklian. "We want NSW workers to sleep as much as possible before they begin their working days."

The Premier says the ban does not effect sales of decaffeinated coffee, nor does it prevent people drinking coffee which they already own.

"We understand many people may already have coffee at home and we can't regulate their consumption of that, but we urge caution."

The new laws follow the NSW government's 2014 ban on alcohol shots, doubles and pre-mixed drinks after midnight in a bid to prevent alcohol-fuelled violence.

"Coffee fuelled violence is also a concern," says the Premier. "Also, sleep deprivation is a leading cause of road accidents."

The ban will come into effect on March 5.
